They anchor the place and provide a fascinating study of the crossing cultures and historical mix of the place. I believe that buildings are alive and witnesses to the tumultuous happenings around them in the passage of time. Twas an old bus route that I used to take with the bus huffing and puffing at the turn, oft getting stuck due to some parked vehicle. The same bus still goes by today but the road is now an improved one-way with a nice pavement. I miss the shops of old with the bustling traditional trades but I also like the mix of old and modern today with the contrasting architecture at both sides that have seen the times change. On the left we have the more Malay-Islamic style buildings leading to Geylang Serai. On the right are the more Chinese ones with some truly beautiful peranakan residences down the stretch. Joo Chiat Road itself is a bridge between malay Geylang Serai and chinese peranakan Katong areas, 2 distinct cultures. And so we have an interesting melting pot of 2 colourful architectural influences at this lovely corner that inspired my whimsical take.

 The Corner Shophouse (joo chiat road), 30x20 inches, oil on canvas

Just further down Joo Chiat Road is an iconic shophouse in an angled corner, a 1928 building with impressive chinese dragons overlooking the buzz in the shops below. The building was originally bright yellow when I moved into the area and then painted over beige white which annoyed me at the loss of colour. But one day when I was walking by in the twilight, the dark mahogany motifs came alive and struck me how delicately intricate they were with many unknown ancient creatures woven into them if one were to look carefully. The motifs of this building are simply beautiful no matter what new paint coats adorn them or how the shops below have changed from traditional trades to a hip coffee joint today. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">After a beep last year this time (due to sheer exhaustion from moving house!), am getting back into my annual christmas "pilgrimage" mode.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">November is the time when gifts can be sent in time for christmas, and I can make the donation in december as a cheer for the seasons. Yes, 50% of my november sales proceeds will go to to elderly charities in my country, a personal cause of mine these few years given the inadequacy of social netting here.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is also my 10th christmas charity event, marking how long I have been painting and come into confidence as an artist to share my creations with the world. It has been one long journey from impressionism to expressionism, and now to exploring abstractism. Along the way, I have made many friends and met many art lovers and creators, an invaluable experience I would not have exhanged for anything in the world period.
For this exhibition, it is yet another exciting sojourn into unexpectedness as I ventured into the world of abstractism and found myself going back to the basics of colours, shapes and lines that drew me to loving making art in the first place. Starting with something or beginning with nothing, it gets somewhere, somehow, disappears, gone and then comes back again. And that is the beauty of it all. Come discover something within you, and in us :)
DREAMembrance presents the collective works of three artists as they explore the interplay between dreams and memories, creating a rich and colorful realm that bridges the past with the present, realities with aspirations. The artworks depict the artists’ emotive connections to places, people, objects, and experiences that transport the viewer to a deeply intimate space.

Ong Hwee Yen offers a fresh take on local landmark scenes through a series of forget-me-not art vignettes of the place she grew up and dreamt in. Chris Lim’s paintings are a mix of reminiscences of landscapes, cityscapes, animals, and still life objects, conjuring a dream-like effect that evokes mystery, disorientation, and nostalgia. Using a semi-abstract approach, Arlyn de Jesus creates a series of social commentaries through whimsical mindscapes about living in a hyper-connected world.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Yep. It's that time of the year for my annual christmas "pilgrimage" since I started selling art. The world has gone from posting physical snail mail greeting cards to come full circle where everything is ordered at the click of a button, which keeps deliverymen busy as ever whilst many a brick and mortar store is left biting the dust. Or is there a turnaround yet?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Well, I am not laying my bets. Meanwhile I am reminded of my old Pigeon Symphony painting, the first one sold, peaceful as ever watching the world, and flowing waters, go by endlessly in time. No matter what the mad mad world turns into, we still need the comforting solace of our fellow compatriots.<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14px;">Ta-da! Introducing my new revamped website: www.artbyyen.com<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14px;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial";"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #444444; font-family: "arial";">
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "arial";">Been tardy about blogging since I discover the insta-joy of instagram, and yes, been too busy painting my heart out, no kidding ;p
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "lato" , "roboto" , "opens sans" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.42857;">
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "lato" , "roboto" , "opens sans" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.4px;">Okay no more excuses, I am back after six months, oops.. and wonder where I should begin. My art journey in the past half year has been one of experimentation, not of the wild abandon variety, but trying out new things that I have not had the time to do before, and painting things (even cliche ones!) I have wanted to do at some time but never found the time. In other words, I was having way too much fun ;p
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "lato" , "roboto" , "opens sans" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.4px;">

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "lato" , "roboto" , "opens sans" , "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.4px;">Revamping my website has given me the chance to contemplate and to draw a thread to it all.. namely, abstraction and more precisely, its no-boundaries anything-goes methods which help me to hone my original style. I have learnt that the brush and knife are not the only ways to paint, in fact, it is the tool I used least in my recent work. So I veered from abstraction methods of thick layering, sponging, collage, using objects, fingers, you name it, from impressionism to abstraction and back. Including some artwork here that I personally like, whether they came about accidentally or not ;p After all, abstraction is not knowing where I'd land which is what makes the process so exciting :) My art journey is getting more fun by the day..
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Yes around the corner. Thank goodness for annual holidays that remind us there is still good and relative peace (no world wars) to be thankful for. Being able to say good things to others.. even a simple holiday greeting.. to be kind to one another (no putting downs).. these little gestures are fast going the way of the dodo if you believe the world of internet advancedness where civility to fellow human beings is in short thrift..
So it is only apt that my footnote piece is of the protagonist herself, and inspired by a recent real life episode of the little girl who is now 1 year old and, ahem, likes to do her own shopping ;p To a child, a mall must seem like wonderland so it is that I made sure she gets plentiful colourful company, including a beloved care bear.
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px;">Untitled 11 is a nostalgic ocean piece that got sold almost as soon as I posted it on facebook ;p I had meant to do this one for some time, having taken a break from the series to paint for another themed exhibition. It was inspired by a story my dad likes to tell, of how he first saw my mum, a little girl with 2 plaits playing balloon (pronounced "bear-loon" for hopscotch) at the beach. This must have been the beach at my grandma's place in Johore where they were both born. So the innocence, romance and idyllic freedom of a little girl skipping at sea theme was born.
It is good to see you staying relaxed, good-natured and unfazed, all the brouhaha and attention notwithstanding. You certainly deserve the immense adulation and numerous accolades, and the greatest honour of course, if it can even match the historic moment that you touched that wall ahead of Michael Phelps, Chad Le Clos and Laslo Cseh, all amazingly reaching at the same time for the silver but that's another story.

<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19px;">When you came in first in the heats, I wondered if you had peaked too soon. But your focus on winning was clear, not putting too much on the win. Even when you won the gold, you said it is not as if it is your 22nd or 23rd, showing the same humbleness and respect to your fellow swimmers, all greats in their own right on their day, especially your hero Michael Phelps who went on to win his 23rd. The spirit of comradeship amongst the medallists during the lap of honour was one of the most touching that I have witnessed on the sports arena which epitomises Olympics at its best. This is what true competition is about, the best for the sport above all. Whether a baton is passed or not, only history will know but with this right spirit, may this be only the beginning. And let not that pressure cooker that is that great, ahem, oft unreasonable, Singapore Expectation ever get to you.
And this is what I was moved to paint on that historic day - of you breaking out in smiles of joy, and perhaps, relief, during a TV interview by the poolside soon after the triumph. It was an unforgettable expression which I hope I have done justice to. Well done, my compatriot.
It was hard to get by without a night of jokes at what we had to ingest, and scrimping to save for the occasional visit to a chinese restaurant, and rarer still then, a xingzhou restaurant that charged a dear pound for a stick of satay. Even the humble maggi noodles, which had to be specially scoured from a trip to chinatown, tasted of home. And chilli, I have never missed it more for my entire life! But I am digressing.
<span style="color: #444444; font-family: "arial";">When I was asked to paint on the theme of food, an intrinsic part of our culture, and very much the DNA of a true blue Singaporean, whether Chinese, Malay, Indian, Eurasian or other race, the “hunger agony” of my London days came vividly to mind. As well as a comment from our very own PM on what he hears most from overseas Singaporeans about missing home.
Just as it was perfectly natural to have playmates of multi races and fun learning how to write tamil 1-2-3 from a classmate.
So it is that a magical fairytale journey unfolded with this one, inspired by a photo that I took of Barcelona's beautiful architectural backdrop from Gaudi's Casa Batlló. And with it, the musicians and creatures start to creep in. And it is what your imagination wants it to be..
So the idea of a sea overture with my little girl protagonist conductor was born, with dolphins and whales performing in symphony with the swirling winds of musical notes.
The second was a much longer backpacking trip traversing all over France, which was one hack of a colourful trip with many funny episodes, good and bad, but definitely memorable. I may have encountered a few prickly French as I don't spout any and had a communication issue, but it is hard not to love the country for its beautiful cities, quaint towns, scenic landscapes that look like they come out of an art book, its absolutely rich and fascinating cultural and freedom of artistic expressions that produces so many great artists, and the sheer encouragement of it that is in the psyche of the French which is to be admired and emulated. And Paris with its Eiffel symbol, is an epitome of freedom, and an artist's dream. The current episode will not dent this spirit that has stood the test of time. May the Parisians move on with strength and resilience and continue with their celebrated way of life that should be the way it is, with the ideals to inspire the rest of the world.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #3d85c6; font-family: "arial"; font-stretch: normal; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">If you have been in these parts in the last few months, you will know that we have been living in smoky haze courtesy of a certain country that has been ignoring its neighbours' pleas for years until we finally have a mega disaster of peatland fires that cannot be put out because of the extended El Nino season. It's still not over, at least not until the monsoon rains are here. A disaster created by man unfortunately can only be resolved by nature. In the meantime, the weak and frail are suffering. So it is with a greater sense of urgency that I start my annual christmas drive this year.
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #444444; font-family: "arial";">The week of 23-29 March 2015 has been an emotional one for my fellow countrymen, mourning the departure of a great one whom we owe an indelible debt whatever may be said about the man. The saying that his monument is everywhere is probably something that fully hit the national conscience of many of us only now upon his passing.
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #444444; font-family: "arial";">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #444444; font-family: "arial";">Ironically, I rarely paint Singapore, because it is simply too close to heart. And I always used to think, why is there a need to capture in images, what I already know so well and feel so strongly about, albeit mixed feelings? So my focus has always been on my wanderings, where I am but a transient passer-by to foreign lands, and will need the images to remember my feelings by when I grow old one day, sitting on that rocking chair reminiscing on my life's journey in this world ;p But I am digressing.
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #444444; font-family: "arial";">

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #444444; font-family: "arial";">I have to admit I started painting Singapore again recently only because SG50 is the 'latest fashion', so to speak, for artistic outlet. But I am glad I did. I still stuck to material that strike an emotional chord with me, even if I have to go out and find it in our hot sweltering weather. And I do not really care if people recognise the place or not, as I was never a realist painter in the first place. There are plenty of good artists out there who can record landscape details for posterity. For me, art is and has always been about a personal emotional expression.
